#BookLog – 2: The Magician – Michael Scott

The Magician – Michael Scott
Summary
In the second book of the series, Michael Scott continues our journey with Sopie and Josh and, of course, their famous companion – Nicholas Flamel.
The book lives from the growing tension between Sophie and Josh. Since only Sophie has received her powers, Josh feels like he is falling behind and the gap to his sister is growing. More than once, because of this feeling of inferiority, he seems to turn to the “dark side” and to Dr. John Dee, about whom the book reveals more of his own story.
The book introduces new fascinating and familiar locations such as the catacombs of Paris and the prison island of Alcatraz. We meet Niccolo Machiavelli, who becomes one of my favorite characters in the series. We also meet new mythical legends like the Disir and historical figures like Jeanne d’Arc.
I continue to like how Scott mixes mystical legends and historical figures and facts into his story with such ease. It is always entertaining to find out who is really immortal and which stories are not as fictional as they seem.
I have read some comments that characterize Scott’s writing as repetitive. I disagree. The books are easy to follow, even with the immense amount of characters, places, and mythical legends. Throughout the series, and keep in mind that it is a series of six books, it is helpful to be reminded of some details from time to time.
P.S.: I read the book in German.
